“The life of inner peace, being harmonious and without stress, is the easiest type of existence.” Norman Vincent Peale
After traveling for two weeks in Greece and coming home to the news of all the violence here in this country, I am convinced that we all want the same thing: Peace.
We are all looking for Peace – within ourselves, with our children, our spouses and in our society. We’ll find that Peace when we learn to be present with the energy of anger. Yes, anger.
What do Peace and anger have in common?
Most people think that Peace is the absence of anger. Actually, the opposite is true. There in the center of anger, if you dare to look deep enough, is Peace, awaiting us in quiet repose.
When our sense of Peace, security and safety feels threatened, we build up walls and armor trying to protect that very sense of Peace within us. Think about it. When you were a child, and your sense of Peace or safety felt threatened, you tried to build up enough of a wall to keep the threat away and preserve your sense of Peace.
The challenge is that most of us don’t know how to soothe our own anger, so we “act out” our anger, rather than “talk out” our anger. This is true with our children, our partners, our bosses and our politics.
We will experience Peace when we lean how to become students of our own “big feelings” rather than spewing out those same feelings. Our emotions have something to teach us and when we act out that energy, we miss the lesson.
All “big feelings” begin as small whispers. The more we miss the message, the louder the message becomes.
All “big feelings” have messages for us. The moment we receive the message, the energy dissipates.
Whenever I feel my Peace disturbed, I must ask myself, “What message is here for me?” What lesson is here for ME to learn about MYSELF?
Much as I might like to think otherwise, no one and nothing outside of myself can restore my sense of Peace. Not my children, my husband, my boss, my job, or my President. I can certainly reach out and ask for assistance, but when I am aware that I, and I alone am responsible for my own Peace, in that instant, I am free. I am liberated. I am restored.
Learning to listen to the message of anger is easier than you might think.
