Before Will left for college, we were having a family dinner and Jami and I were acknowledging him and letting him know that we see how ready for his next chapter he is.
To our surprise, he asked Jami and me about OUR process of letting him go!
He shared that he realizes that he is not the only one going through a process, that we, as his parents are going through a process as well.
As Will was completing his senior year of high school on zoom, he realized that he needed a RESET. He had spent the past 4 years in a very intense arts high school Every moment of his last 4 years were spent on film sets and he recognized that he needed a break.
He needed to DO NOTHING all summer … not make a movie, not assist on a film set … he needed to travel, clear his mind, relax, recalibrate and RESET before entering college in the fall.
That RESET wasn’t easy for him at first. Transitioning from constant DOING to RELAXING was vulnerable for him.
Yet, he followed his intuition. He allowed himself to follow his intuition and experience what he needed.
Because we support “processes” in our home, he was aware that night at dinner, that we, too, as his parents are going through our own process. We were able to talk about it together as a family.
Now that he has entered college, he is going through another process … and so are we!
And rituals – large or small – can assist us to PROCESS GRACEFULLY!
Our culture doesn’t support “processes”. It teaches us to by-pass the process, the transition and therefore, we often miss the TRANSFORMATION.
Culture doesn’t recognize the grieving process, the postpartum process, the miscarriage process … the meeting the in-laws process 🙂
So, I create my own! Like the one I describe in the video above. I cut a cord to a plastic bracelet and replaced it with a beautiful lapis mala bracelet given to me by a friend – thank you Zeenath, for your thoughtfulness. You didn’t know at the time that your thoughtfulness would become part of my transformation!
Now, each time I look down at my arm, I have a touch stone that is a physical representation for the GRACE of the process that I am intending.
Is there a process that you need to HONOR in your life right now?
How can you HONOR YOURSELF?
Even the smallest of ACKNOWLEDGMENTS can bring about the largest of TRANSFORMATIONS!
And as always, please know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Let me know what’s calling you! I’d love to know.
Much love,
