I have a vision of a million mothers / women living GUILT FREE!
And I want YOU to be ONE OF THEM!
I don’t know about you guys, but the way I used to think about self-care was so backwards. As a woman — and especially as a mom — I was taught that the solution to showing up as the best parent, the best partner, the best daughter, the best friend I could possibly be to always put others before myself.
My thought process went a little bit like this:
“I KNOW I really need a break, but if I go take a walk now, dinner will be late … and if dinner is late, then Will’s (my son) bedtime will be late … so I’ll just power through”
“I KNOW I just need to stay in tonight, but I don’t wanna hurt my best friend’s feelings.”
“I KNOW my body is aching and I’m so tired today, but if I take an epsom salt bath in the QUIET, I won’t be able to spend quality time with Jami (my husband) tonight, so I’ll just skip it. My body will be fine.”
…I think you can pick up on the pattern here.
The guilt was running RAMPANT in my everyday inner dialogue!
And I thought I was the only one feeling this way. This is why the phrase “mom guilt” has become so popular. (P.S. Notice how the word “dad guilt” simply doesn’t exist 👀).
What made me change things for myself?
It was NOT LIKING the way that I was showing up for Will. I was IMPATIENT and NOT FUN to be around!
I didn’t even like being around me! 🙂
SO … I created a 21-day “Kindness Challenge,” for myself and it worked pretty much exactly how you’d think it would. I set the intention to speak kindly to myself for 21 days straight. And when I caught myself being mean to myself, feeling guilty, or shaming myself for taking time out of my day to take care of ME? I started over at day 1.
…I’ll be so honest with you – it took several months to get all the way through to the end. But you know what? I didn’t mind.
Because I got in lots of practice, and learned plenty of lessons along the way.
All of which, I want to share with you!
