I am so grateful for EACH one of you!
On this day of Thanks-Giving (in the US) I wanted to share with you a simple gratitude game that we’ve played in our home over the years. It’s a great way to bring connection, Joy, laughter and fun into your day, family and home. Especially in these times when family stress may be high.
We simply go around the table and each person shares something they are grateful for. We are trying to get to 100 gratitudes, so the person who starts simply says “#1 … I’m so grateful for ….”. The next person, “#2 … I’m so grateful for ….”
It so simple, but it brings out our competitive spirits! No one wants to be the one who doesn’t have a gratitude! We rarely get all the way to 100 because inevitably one of the gratitudes will spark a great family memory or something heartfelt and by the time we get back to the game, we cannot remember what number we are on.
On a deeper level, I LOVE this game because it gives us a peek into what someone holds dear in their heart. It never ceases to amaze me, after 17 years, the things Will is grateful for. I think material things like his cameras, film equipment, etc would come first (which would be fine. I know he is grateful for these prized possessions), but his appreciation for a simple note or text of encouragement or acknowledgment that I’d sent … or the way I helped him through a challenge with school or a friend … that I had long forgotten often comes to the top of his list – and I get a peek into what is made a difference to HIM!
Of course, you can create variations and play it anytime. We play it on New Years Day and I used to do it before tucking him into bed at night (not to 100 though!). We also have a “gratitude wall” which is simply a large sheet of poster paper hung on a wall in our living room with a little basket of colored markers nearby. We write something we are grateful for as we walk past it throughout the year. When the page is full, we all sit down and read through them. It’s fun to remember the gratitudes that have happened over the year.
It’s so fascinating to me to see what others treasure. This simple gratitude game invites more intimacy and connection into our family and I hope it will to yours as well
