My 17-year-old son, Will, was scheduled to be shooting a film this weekend for school. He had intended to shoot it 3 weeks prior, but the dad of his very best friend died of a very aggressive form of cancer and the memorial was that weekend, so of course, we wanted to be with the family and Will rescheduled his shoot.
As of the Tuesday before the weekend shoot, 3 of his 4 actors had to drop out, the truck he had planned to use was no longer available and the location he had secured was also in question.
My heart was breaking for him and I almost encouraged him to cancel the shoot. Yet, if there’s one thing I’ve learned on my path, it’s to keep my mouth closed unless absolutely necessary 🙂
And I’m so glad I did! As I simply sat and listened to him, 2 things became apparent to me:
- That is was MY ANXIETY, not his. I am not cut out for film making. Last minute changes, things falling apart, not being in control are challenging for ME, not him.
- Will was simply expressing what was happening in his world, but he, himself was in SOLUTION mode. He found THREE amazing actors, the perfect pick up truck and the location he really wanted came through for him.
Had I allowed MY anxiety to speak, he wouldn’t have completed his film, all to quell MY anxiety, not his. AND, I ‘d have robbed him of powerful life experience and becoming aware of his qualities of persistence, tenacity and the power of pure passion to manifest a dream.
I can’t tell you how proud I am that I’ve learned to keep my mouth closed and turn the mirror away from him and onto MYSELF so that I don’t project MY feelings onto him.
Turning the mirror onto ourselves isn’t easy to do. And it isn’t easy to do alone.
