I walked into an outdoor mall last Sun to have lunch with some friends and the first thing I saw when I arrived was a huge Santa display. Really? Already? My heart sunk!
With the end of the year approaching, there’s a hustle and bustle around us that can send us into a frenzy if we’re not conscious and aware.
When the commercialism and consumerism of the world begins to rev up, I intentionally begin to “quiet down”.
To that end, I’ve created a weekly inspiration series to assist you to move through this season stress free and joy filled.
This time of year can intensify emotions, especially around our children, family and financial stress.
If you try to avoid the discomfort of these emotions, you’ll inevitably either project your emotions outward, spewing them all over your children and those around you, or distract yourself with over eating, over spending or you’ll stuff them down with self shame and self sabotage.
All the emotions that get stirred up in you toward your children reflect your own inner unrest. That’s why no one benefits more from your emotional self care than your children!
The number 1 thing to embody is:
“Really?” you’re thinking. Is that stress really my friend?
Emotions are our body’s communication system, alerting us to what is happening inside us. The more we resist our emotions, the louder they “tantrum,” whereas when we embrace them – yes, even embrace your stress – we can sooth them, and we become aware that they actually have an important message for us.
When you allow yourself to simply “be” present, and “hold a sacred space” for your emotions to be expressed, you will no longer spew them onto your children and those closest to you.
Remember,
JOURNALING
Here are some JOURNAL PROMPTS to assist you to create a “safe space” within yourself:
- What are the emotional triggers in my life right now? What if they are my friends?
- What if these emotions are “messengers”? What message might this emotion have for me?
- Can you envision your big, intense, ugly emotions as small, tiny, fragile, vulnerable, unmet childhood needs just trying to get your attention?
- Are you willing to stop judging your emotions and instead, create a “safe space” for your emotion to share with you?
- How would this assist your relationship with your children? Your family? This season of the year?

“Dear Suzi, I LOVE THIS CLASS because It helped me see that by not looking after my emotions I was projecting them outwards onto my kids / asking others to take care of my emotional needs. 100000% agree with you that no one benefits more from our own emotional self care than our children.
