Have you ever said or done something to someone you care about that hurt them?
I recently made a comment to a friend of mine and the moment it was coming out of my mouth; I could see that she was becoming emotional and that I had hurt her feelings deeply. But it was too late to take it back and as well, it was at the end of a longer, beautiful conversation we had just had, and we both needed to go in that moment.
I was left sitting with the pain that I had unintentionally caused.
Learning to sit with those uncomfortable feelings WITHOUT self-criticism and self-shaming, but with compassion for both of us, is always the first step.
Have you begun to practice this in your life?
My intention in all of my relationships is to be harmless … to do no harm … to be a benevolent Presence, to be a safe space and to create connection and intimacy in this short life that we have.
Do you have a clear intention on how you want to show up in your relationships?
There is something so powerful about having the courage to circle back to a conversation, to apologize, to humbly make amends, to show ourselves authentically, with all of our flaws and without protection or defensiveness, to see the other person, and ultimately, to bring HUMANITY into the relationship.
Note: This individual is a close friend who is also interested in and capable of having a safe and authentic relationship. The above doesn’t apply to toxic relationships or with individuals who aren’t capable of meeting you where you are 🙂
I share this because our culture doesn’t teach us that these MESSY MOMENTS can actually bring us CLOSER to another person and that is exactly what occurred between us.
Through a series of follow up heartfelt, open and authentic conversations, we are now EVEN CLOSER than ever!
There was something there for me and there was something there for her as well.
Whether it is your child, spouse, in law, client, co-worker or friend, every single one of us wants to be seen and valued and treated with dignity and respect.
When we fall short, we still have the opportunity to repair and ultimately become even closer with that individual.
And isn’t a deeper connection what we are all looking for?!
Try it! You’ll be so glad you did!
